Just in time for the holidays, I’ve got my first Amorphophallus (don’t know the species) about to flower. So how bad is this going to stink?
I keep a few pots around because I love the foliage. Now I’m wondering if I’ll have the same love for the flower. Chances are good I’ll move it to the office Friday and let it ride out the putrid period while no one is around over the holidays.
From personal experience: Really bad, but just for a couple days. And TOTALLY worth it.
Oh, and looks like A. konjac to me, but not certain.
I’m pretty sure you’re right on the A. konjac. But can I make it ’til Thursday to get it to the office before it starts reeking.
Cool! Is that the one where the flower looks like a lung? (there was one that did in the LHB conservatory). Nice alliteration with “putrid period.” Have fun with it!
Really bad. But it is *so* cool!
I came home from work when one of ours was blooming. I got out of the truck and wondered why on earth the trash smelled so bad. I walked to the door and kept thinking, “geez!” then I realized the bloom we’d been waiting for had finally opened! It was covered in flies!

Though the smell is unpleasant, it is no more so than if you forgot to take out the trash after a kegger.
See, I guess I will never truly understand horticulturist…
Smelling like the trash after a kegger isn’t a bug. It’s a feature.
I’m probably going to chicken out tonight and cut it off and scan it before it stinks up the place.
Best wishes and happy new year, my dear Craig.
So, did you chicken out and cut if off, or did you brave the stench?
completely off topic (so remove after you read, won’t hurt my feelings a bit)
