With temps up in the 40s yesterday and some sun in the afternoon, the ice cleared from the water garden. Because it’s spring-fed, it’s late to ice over and quick to melt. In it’s short life, I’ve never had to worry much about fish winterkilling. Still, it’s always a relief to see that the koi, shubunkins, goldfish, and minnows (goodness knows where they came from) are fine — if a little on the skinny side.
It’s strange to read about your warming trend and renewed life in the garden, because 40s are considered cold, winter weather here in Austin. But where you are, it’s the beginning of spring. I often complain about our heat, but I wonder if I could get used to northern winters. Or chilly springs, for that matter. Brrr! But I bet you have an appreciation for spring that we Southerners never have.

Pam: Can you get used to it? Some do, some don’t. I moved to this area from Maryland as a kid, and remember wondering if it ever got warm. It helps now that I lived near the Twin Cities for a few years. Now that’s cold.
Here, we have the coldest 35 and the hottest 75 in the country. But as I tell the students newly arrived on campus from tropical climes (quoting a friend), “There’s no such thing as bad weather. Just bad clothes.”
