First frost

There was scattered frost Saturday morning, meaning that the low spots in our yard (including the vegetable garden) got hit pretty good while plants near the house survived mostly. I don’t think it will be recorded as an official frost as the official weather stations in this area have warmer microclimates on cold nights.

I have heard that we have already broken the record for longest growing season. But I’ll await official word.

Frost is always fun to shoot. The frosty lawn and the water garden:

Who needs a personal weather station?

…When you’ve got a professional weather station just 5 miles away with a great new online interface. It was down for awhile, but I am so happy to have the Garm Farm Road logger back online with it’s hourly summaries:

  • Air Temp (max and min)
  • Heat Index
  • Precipitation
  • Relative humidity
  • Wind speed and direction
  • Soil temps at 4 and 8 inches
  • Solar radiation

Sure. Anytime there’s radiational cooling we’re a few degrees colder. Ditto on warm afternoons. But the soil temps are especially great when you get the itch to plant too early.
