Happy Year of the Tiger

Last month, the U.S Postal Service issued this stamp to celebrate the Year of the Tiger.
Read more about Narcissus and Chinese culture at The Human Flower Project.
I also love this lawn illustration by Kam Mak, the artist who created the stamp. This magnolia and monarch, too.
milly acharya botanical illustrations at Mann Library
I’m no art critic. But I am a big sucker for botanical illustration.
I had a few minutes to check out the exhibition at the Mann Library Gallery of works by Ithaca artist milly acharya this afternoon. If you’re in the area, go see them. If you’re not, check out her gallery. (Delphine: allez voient) Click on the image at right for a larger view of one of my favorites.
Botanical illustration can be dry. But acharya’s are filled with life. Plus, most of them are plants that I grow, as local plants are the focus of her work.
Another must-see at Mann: Chad Miller, one of our doctoral candidates in the Dept. of Horticulture will be giving a presentation on The Traveling Tulip this Sunday at noon. Be there or be square.
Pollen (National Geographic)
Ran across this photo essay on Pollen in the waiting room this morning. Great color-enhanced electron microscopy pix.
Don’t miss the photo gallery featuring additional pix not found in the hard copy.
Ellis Hollow calendars
Last week, I received the first hard copy of my new bloom day scan calendar. I was so impressed with the quality of the printing that I pulled together a second calendar of photos.
So those of you who have requested calendars over the years, you can visit zazzle.com and order them online.
I haven’t had time to master all the features of zazzle.com yet. Not sure that I’d want to make a living off zazzle sales. But if you’ve ever thought of making a few calendars or notecards from you images, it’s worth a try.
