{"id":811,"date":"2010-02-21T16:43:12","date_gmt":"2010-02-21T23:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.remarc.com\/craig\/?p=811"},"modified":"2010-02-21T16:43:12","modified_gmt":"2010-02-21T23:43:12","slug":"february-picture-this-photo-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ellishollow.remarc.com\/?p=811","title":{"rendered":"February Picture This Photo Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s my entry in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gardeninggonewild.com\/?p=10961#more-10961\">February Gardening Gone Wild photo contest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To be clear, the top image in this post is my entry. <\/strong> The rest are other winter images I like, but didn&#8217;t make the cut.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/fred_bottle_treex1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/fred_bottle_treex500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I chose that one based purely on emotion.  Nothing beats interest like a Dalmatian in the snow.  And given Fred&#8217;s recent brush with death for the second time this year, I had to make this one my lede and entry.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll admit that my collection of winter garden images is limited.  I think it&#8217;s mostly because I get out of the habit of shooting, and the fact that five days a week it&#8217;s dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home.  The next three are from a freak appearance of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.remarc.com\/craig\/?p=524\">January in November<\/a> of 2008.  The light was pretty intense.  But I like snowblind on occasion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/imp_jan_in_nov10x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/imp_jan_in_nov10x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/imp_jan_in_nov13x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/imp_jan_in_nov13x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/imp_jan_in_nov11x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/imp_jan_in_nov11x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Grasses take on a life of their own in the snow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/snowcapped_grassx1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/snowcapped_grassx500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This next series is actually from an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.remarc.com\/craig\/?p=759\">early snow we had last Oct. 16<\/a> when the grasses were still green and the leaves were still on the trees.  Interesting, but not really winter.  (It all melted by noon.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/snow_on_grasstlwx1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/snow_on_grasstlwx500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/snow_on_grass1x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/snow_on_grass1x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/snow_on_grass_willowx1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/snow_on_grass_willowx500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The closest I&#8217;ve come to capturing that winter light Roger speaks of was during this lucky encounter at the winter garden at Cornell Plantations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/winter_garden_5x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_5x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/winter_garden_1x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_1x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frost on the cold frame is always a good subject for abstraction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/frostoncoldframex1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/frostoncoldframex500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bittersweet berries in an encounter with &#8216;wintry mix&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/frozen_bittersweetx1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/frozen_bittersweetx500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frosty heuchera.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/brown_heucherax1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/brown_heucherax500.jpg\" alt=\"winter image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But this is my favorite winter image of all time.
