I&#8217;m always reminded of my shortcomings when I visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plantations.cornell.edu\/our-gardens\/botanical\/mullestein\">Mullestein Winter Garden<\/a> at Cornell Plantations.<\/p>\n<p>While its &#8216;bones&#8217; are way beyond my means, I would do well to focus on planting more evergreens of various shapes, sizes and hues, as well as more colorful-twigged trees and shrubs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/winter_garden_1x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_1x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter garden\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The basic structure of the garden is a large circular area divided into four massive raised beds with a millstone in the center.<br \/>\n<a href=\"images\/winter_garden_2x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_2x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter garden\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are nice views down the axes, but the plantings still have a very informal feel despite the hardscape&#8217;s symmetry.<br \/>\n<a href=\"images\/winter_garden_3x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_3x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter garden\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nearby plantings look pretty good too, especially captured when the sun pokes through the clouds just before setting.<br \/>\n<a href=\"images\/winter_garden_5x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_5x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter garden\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"images\/winter_garden_6x1200.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/winter_garden_6x500.jpg\" alt=\"winter garden\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Living where I do, you&#8217;d think I&#8217;d pay more attention to planting more things that look really good the other six months of the year.
