(See <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.remarc.com\/craig\/?p=154\">Motherplants: Where green roofs are born<\/a>.)  About a month ago, I swung by a site in Ithaca where she was working with a group of volunteers to prep planting units for a living wall.<\/p>\n<p><a HREF=\"images\/living_wall_lsx1200.jpg\"><img SRC=\"images\/living_wall_lsx500.jpg\" ALT=\"living wall long shot\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Marguerite instructed the young and old alike who turned out on a hot day to transplant sedums and other living roof plants from flats into plastic wall hanging units.<\/p>\n<p><a HREF=\"images\/living_wall_instructionsx1200.jpg\"><img SRC=\"images\/living_wall_instructionsx50.jpg\" ALT=\"living wall long shot\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a HREF=\"images\/living_wall_activityx1200.jpg\"><img ALIGN=\"top\" SRC=\"images\/living_wall_activityx500.jpg\" ALT=\"living wall instructions\" \/><\/a><a HREF=\"images\/living_wall_plantingx1200.jpg\"><img SRC=\"images\/living_wall_plantingx250.jpg\" ALT=\"living wall planting\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally, the plan was to install the planting on the roof.  But the required retrofitting to beef it up\u00c2\u00a0enough to hold the extra weight proved too expensive.  So Plan B was to locate the planting where runoff from the roof will run over the plants.<\/p>\n<p><a HREF=\"images\/living_wall_cux500.jpg\"><img ALIGN=\"top\" SRC=\"images\/living_wall_cux250.jpg\" ALT=\"living wall planting\" \/><\/a><a HREF=\"images\/living_wall_testx1200.jpg\"><img ALIGN=\"right\" SRC=\"images\/living_wall_testx500.jpg\" ALT=\"living wall test\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The planted units were laid flat to root thoroughly and then hung a few weeks later.  (See finished wall below.)<\/p>\n<p>While I like the idea of green\/living roofs, I don&#8217;t see too many homeowners diving in.
