I have always admired his work.
Thanks for the links. As an artist who tends to err on the side of populism (in visual art at least), I am a great admirer of Andrew Wyeth for his skill and his singular vision.
They are an interesting family. The dad, NC Wyeth did fascinating illustrations. I’m not so sure I am not more interested in him (sorry for double 0)
I think you need to read Richard Merryman’s bio of Wyeth. What you are seeing in these images is not what Wyeth saw. He (and NC) were both secretive, strange, and working out their own issues in their work.
Merryman tells of Halloween at Andy’s house. Doorbell rings. Little trick-or-treater at the door. Wyeth — in costume — opens the door and the child is terrified. Don’t be scared, it’s only a mask, Wyeth says. He pulls it off, only to reveal a yet scarier mask underneath.
That’s how I always think of him and his work: the mask behind the mask.
