I like Polygonatum odoratum ‘Variegatum’. But I love it when it first emerges and when it starts to die back.

This was one of my first perennials when I started getting serious about gardening years ago. I loved it then and I love it now, and thanks to your post, I’m looking at it with new eyes. 🙂
Diff K: To quote Piet Oudolf, Great plants look good dead.
Or in this case, at least while they’re dying.
I quite agree. This is a beautiful plant dead or alive.
Shit. Your photography continues to depress me. I’ve taken a bunch of pics of solomon’s seal and none of them are worth a damn.
Hiya Craig,
I don’t know what all this Oudolf fuss is about: I have never cut my plants back for the winter and I have been gardening for more decades that I care to remember.
Dying back sounds a little better than dying 😉
I am so glad that I am not the only gardener with snail damage…although you seem to have far more uneaten leaves than me ;-). Nice picture against the light.
By invoking Oudolf, I can be lazy and pretentious at the same time.
