‘Little Bulbs’

I’ve been reading Elizabeth Lawrence’s Little Bulbs as an alternative selection for the April/May Garden Bloggers Book Club. I’m thinking maybe folks should grow more of these.

I won this Eranthis cultivar as a door prize at a meeting a couple years ago. But I lost the tag. If anyone recognizes it, let me know.

  1. I think Kim/Blackswamp has that same one. Check it out.

Craig, I want you to come to Garden Walk this year! Kim might and others too. Not a big meet up, but a nice alternative for those who are nearby and couldn’t make Austin.

  2. I bought this book over Christmas to go with ‘No One Gardens Alone’. I am 1/4 of the way through the latter and want to finish it soon.

I love bulbs and would have a field of irises if I could.

  3. What a happy coincidence…I decided to read this same book as an alternative book, I love her writing! I am here via Susan Harris and wanted to see her Excellent choice. Those are lovely photos of little bulbs.

  4. I believe that’s Eranthis hyemalis, which is what I have. I used to grow Iris reticulata & I. dandiforae at my previous garden. I found the elongating foliage difficult to integrate into the front of a garden border, so I never planted any here. How do you deal with the foliage after blooming?

  5. Uh, it turns brown and dies. But that doesn’t bother me much. There’s other stuff growing nearby that distracts me from what some might find ugly.

  6. I like the Iris reticulata, it’s such a bright nice blue against all the yellow that I seem to have in the spring.

And I am happy to read that you are joining in the book club with an Elizabeth Lawrence book!
