Verbascum pix

Verbascums are peaking. So I took a lot of pix. (Kim: Will post pix later of the one I hacked off for scanning last month. It’s interesting.) Check out the flower close-ups in Bees on Verbascum below. I’ve lost track of species. If anyone knows it, please let me know.

  1. I believe that the Verbascum species in the photos above is olympicum. I believe that because I have the same Verbascum in my yard that are in your photos.

  2. Thanks. I at one time also had V. pyramidilis and V. bombyciferum. But I don’t see them so much any more. The one I really miss that isn’t as aggressive is Verbascum roripifolium, which bears small flowers on wiry stems that make the flowers look like they’re floating in the air.

  3. Oooooh…. the more I see of these verbascums the more I wonder why I haven’t planted any before. I really really REALLY like them fronted and backed by grasses like you have them in the bottle tree pic, Craig. The fine textured, vertical grasses really show off their architecturalness. (Yeah, I made that up.) Can’t wait to see the scans, too!
